Sing, Church, Sing - Don's Favorite

September 26, 2018

It’s very hard for me to pick one hymn as my favorite, as there are so many hymns and modern songs that have encouraged me in my life. In fact, as I struggled with depression as a young college student, one musical change helped foster a new attitude towards life. I moved from playing the depressing folk songs of my musical heroes (mostly about broken relationships), to spending time praising God with my guitar and voice. I sang the life of Christ into my downcast soul. Over time, as my depression lifted, I sang with greater joy and meaning.  ...

Word of the Week: Bind I’m coming off the joys of a great 25 hours or so with the brothers at Grace Community Church. Mike Sharrett did a great job showing us the power and beauty of humility, and left us all wondering how we missed it so badly! We learned a new song together called Bind Us Together by Paul Zach of Portico Church. It is a great song for a church whose motto is “discipleship through relationship.” We can’t make it alone. We can’t let someone stand alone. The love of Christ binds us together so we grow together, struggle ...

Sing, Church, Sing - Karen's Favorite

“Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness, the nourishment of mind by His truth, the purifying of imagination by His beauty, the opening of the heart to His love, and the submission of the will to His purpose.” (William Temple) When asked to write about a favorite worship song, it is hard for me to pick just one song. There are many songs that stir my emotions and make me feel close to God, but that is not the actual point of worship. It is truth about God, the love of God, and ...

Word of the week: Help Sunday we prayed for the victims of Hurricane Florence at our church. It appears that our area is graciously spared major flooding and damage. One of our deacons asked how we could donate to help with Flo clean up. May I recommend a contribution to Mission to North America Disaster Response’s Hurricane Florence fund? This money will go to help teams that come in to help people just like us. Staging from PCA congregations in the area, our teams will help church members and their neighbors with clean up. They will be ...

Sing, Church, Sing - Jimmy's Favorite

Sing, Church, Sing - Jimmy’s Favorite Picking a favorite song or hymn is daunting task. As I prayerfully reflected through seasons of my life attempting to recall songs that have special meaning I found myself continually coming back to a hymn written by a friend of a friend in the late 18th century. William Cowper (pronounced COO-per) was born into an upper-class English family. Given his status and family connections Cowper was educated with the intent of continuing in the family business of practicing law. Just before his preliminary ...

Word of the week: Together As I write this word of the week it seems that the powerful hurricane Florence is going to hit SC and turn into Charleston. Earlier this week we were seeing a forecast of 20 inches of rain in Central VA. Given the sogginess we have now, I can only imagine the damage. We did some things on Facebook to connect us together. We started a GCC storm group. Because if this happens our mission is to be the body of Christ to one another. Chain saw teams to members with trees down, groups of GCC volunteers helping your ...

Sing, Church, Sing - Tom's Favorite

For the next four weeks, we’re doing a sermon series on congregational worship that we’re calling, “Sing Church, Sing!” There’s more to congregational worship than singing – but singing is a huge part of it. Why do we sing when we gather together for worship? You’ll have to come on Sunday to hear the answer to that. The point of this post and the ones that follow will be to highlight a few songs that are special to some of the leaders in our church. My favorite song that we sing in worship is “In Christ Alone.” It’s an easy song with which ...

Word of the Week: Thanks After a sermon encouraging us to serve and love one another, I have to admit I failed to do something important on Sunday. I failed to say thank you again to all of you who serve faithfully to make Grace a church that is all about discipleship through relationship. I’ve been blessed so much by the many of you who are ready to serve, whether its guys who are glad to rearrange chairs after a men’s event, or the elders and deacons who will drop what they are doing in a crisis to assist one of us. There are so many of ...
