The Holy Spirit and the Conviction of Sin

September 30, 2015
Cara Kidd
Have you ever had to acknowledge your own terribleness? What about your own self-righteousness? And judgment? The gift of how you are able to recognize these things is through the Holy Spirit. We have been given the person of the Holy Spirit to convict us of our sin, convict us of righteousness, and judge the world. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world ...

Bringing Japan to you I promised last week that if you attend the Japan Partnership Fall for Japan Missions conference that we would bring Japan to you.  It is coming to pass!  We will have numerous missionaries from Japan present, including a number of Japanese nationals.   Hundreds of years of knowledge and experience in Japan missions will be right in our own church. Already 52 people from outside our church are registered, before any members of Grace have signed up.  It already promises to be the largest missions conference ever held ...

The Holy Spirit as Counselor

September 24, 2015
Stacey Powdrell
The pastors have built a great foundation for us the last two weeks explaining who the Holy Spirit is, as well as why He was sent to dwell within God’s people. So often we jump the gun beginning first with what the Spirit does before understanding the basics of who He is and why He is. Of all the different “nicknames” for the Holy Spirit, I most easily relate with “The Counselor.”  Whether you’ve benefited from the counsel of a trained professional, a spiritual mentor, or simply a wise friend, I’m sure you’ve learned a thing or two about ...

Hi, Gracians!  Cheri Bales, a member of our church, sent me this poem about our speech that I wanted to share with all of you: The Tyrant Tongue It is an artful dodger, Knows the fine art of evasion Who has a power stronger Than the power of persuasion One voice can change our destiny One echo in the night One solitary word Can bring us bedlam or delight We each possess this tyrant Or is it the one possessing? First assault with your deadly weapon And then do your confessing We can murder, maim, or mesmerize We're at the ...

John Calvin and the Holy Spirit

September 18, 2015
Tag Tuck
John Calvin was known as the “theologian of the Holy Spirit.” Today, however, the Holy Spirit seems to be more closely associated with churches that emphasize miraculous gifts and healings. This is unfortunate because the result has been that many people associate Christians who talk about the Holy Spirit as a little crazy, helplessly naïve or less than trustworthy. Calvin is someone I like to read because I haven’t found any other author who uses the Bible more completely or with a thoroughly rational mind. Most Evangelical Christians like ...

Word of the Week: Wisdom We’ve been on the fast track through topics in Proverbs: total trust in God, work, money.  In the coming weeks we will look at speech, fidelity, and the heart.  There is way too much good material in Proverbs on each of these topics.  We have a solution - do a little reading on your own!  We’ve provided resources for you on our website.  All of the documents for each sermon start with, of all things, Proverbs.  Easy to find and download for personal study and reflection! In Him, Don

The Holy Spirit

Over the next few weeks, several of us are going to be writing about the Holy Spirit.  I’ll get us started with some general truths about God the Holy Spirit.  Next week we’ll learn a little more on what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit.  Several others will write about the everyday aspects of life in the Holy Spirit.  I pray that you may grow in thankfulness for the Holy Spirit and His great work in our lives. He is a He Sometimes Christians speak of the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force.  I find myself slipping into that thinking ...

Teamwork We don’t have to figure everything out.  We at Grace Community Church don’t have to answer every question, or solve every problem ourselves.  People often say of society’s ills, “the church needs to do something.”  We do, but we at Grace don’t have to do it all ourselves. We were reminded of this again when Rebecca Goodwin Feldmann of Charlottesville Abundant Life Center reported to us this past Sunday.  We learned how the prayers of a lady who lived in tough part of town were answered in part by her connection with Dr. Amy ...

The Conversation

September 04, 2015
These can be uncomfortable topics to talk about: How do we interact with what the Bible says about sex and sexuality? What does it look like to live in a world after this summer's Supreme Court decision about marriage?   We're seeking to model good discussion about these and other questions at a series of events called "The Conversation." Each gathering will begin with a conversation between a pastor, Tag Tuck, and a professional counselor, Jason Brown of New City Counseling. Then we'll open it up to Q & A. We'll end our ...

Season of Life

Today (September 1) is the 18th anniversary of my start here at Grace Community Church.  October 5th will be the 18th anniversary of our first worship service.  October will also be the 30th anniversary of my ordination into the gospel ministry.  As many of you know, the elders of Grace granted me my second sabbatical this past summer.  With so many good numbers coming together, it was a great time to be thinking about both the past and the future. A good deal of my time was spent praying and thinking about longevity in ministry.  I read a ...
