Meet Sean Smith

June 28, 2017
Sean Smith
Hello Grace Family, My name is Sean Smith and I am the new youth director at Grace! This blog is for you to get to know me a little bit better. I am the oldest of three. I have a sister who is twenty-two and a brother who is nineteen. We were raised by an amazing, single mother who always pointed us to Jesus, which was huge blessing. I love my family! I played college basketball, so that is one of my main hobbies. Count me in for anything that involves sports and being active! God has gifted me with a love for others, so I take full ...

Word of the Week: Missions It hit me this morning – this is a full year for missions at Grace! On July 17-31, Pastor Don is going to Malawi to train and support African pastors. On July 22-29, Fleming Straughan is going to Ireland to pray for and encourage Irish missionaries. On October 20-29, Grace is sending a team of nine to go serve in Japan. Full, right? Many of us aren’t going on these trips, yet still we’re a part of them. Every missions trip is a team effort and it has been wonderful watching so many of you joining the effort....

Growth and Maturity

I remember the first time I brought home my own puppy. He was a Great Pyrenees, which means that even as a tiny pup he still had big feet and an even bigger head. I named him Atlas, anticipating the hundred-and-fifty-pound fur ball that he would grow up to be. If you’ve ever had a puppy, you know that training them is a slow process. I was thrilled the first time he ever responded to “Sit” …but he didn’t sit still for more than a second. Thankfully he got better and better as time went on, sitting still for longer and longer periods of time....

Word of the Week: Update Tom, Tag and I were all at the PCA General Assembly last week. We enjoyed some vibrant worship (and yes, we are stealing a song or two to use at Grace) and good preaching for the three nights. There were business meetings all day Wednesday and Thursday through about 10:30 AM. History was made as the assembly elected its first Moderator from another ethnic group. Alexander Jun, a local church elder from a Korean Language church (in fact, a Korean language presbytery!) became the first non-Anglo to serve in this r ...

What is General Assembly?

This week our freshly minted Assistant Pastor, Tom Breeden and I will drive to Greensboro, North Carolina for the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America. What is General Assembly and what goes on there? First, this is a great time to remind ourselves that we are not an independent church. We are not only connected to one another, but we are connected and accountable to other believers in the wider church. The first level of that is called “Presbytery”- the church in our region. Before Tom Breeden could become our assistant ...

Word of the week: WOW! As promised, last Sunday was a “Wow” day at Grace Community Church, with the welcoming of our new GCC Youth Director Sean Smith and his wife Gabby, and the ordination of Tom Breeden. Many of Tom’s friends joined in our celebration together. Can’t wait to see the things God will be doing in the months ahead If you want to touch base with Tom or Sean, here is how to reach them via email. Tom's Summer Reading Recommendations

June 07, 2017
Tom Breeden
Confession time: summer is my least favorite season. I don’t have much use for the heat. Working up a sweat just sitting down is unappealing to say the least. I have even less use for the beach. Sand is just nature’s glitter, getting everywhere and never washing out. But there’s one thing I love about summer. The slower pace and traveling that often comes with summer is a great time for reading and I love recommending books. You haven’t asked me for book recommendations but, if you did, here are a few that I’ve read this year and heartily ...

Word of the week: HUGE The word of the week is HUGE. That’s because the next two Sundays in June are HUGE! This Sunday is two big things all in one. Sean and Gabby Smith will be with us this Sunday as he begins his work as youth director. And, also very huge, Tom Breeden is ordained as a minister of the gospel this Sunday and formally becomes our Assistant Pastor. This is so big that there will be the appropriate dessert celebration afterwards. So, cancel all plans for everything else and come at 10:30 to witness the start of something ...

Don's Summer Reading Recommendations

June 01, 2017
Don Ward
To kick off the summer, we picked summer reading recommendations as a blog topic. I’ve been given freedom to recommend some of the fun beach books I read during summers that have no great spiritual message, as well as a few serious ones. I’ll tell you a few of the authors I enjoy. - Michael Connelly has the police/crime genre down. His Bosch character has been put into a program on Amazon Prime and has two seasons. Go to your local library and start with an early one. - A good nonfiction book is Robert O’Neill’s The Operator.  It came ...
