Word of the Week

Word of the week: After I want to talk about “after.”  What happens AFTER church each Sunday is key to who we are at Grace. I really enjoyed the time after church this week, and want to take the opportunity to talk about it a little bit. Something beautiful happens after church. Grace has always been a church where people love to gather and connect after church. Conversations sometimes go long after the benediction. Some weeks the deacon of the day leaves and comes back later because people are still talking.  It’s not unusual to see ...

The Trinity and Baptism

Often there is a need to get back to the basics. In sports there are basic skills that comprise almost every game – throwing and catching, endurance, stretching and running. In business there are basic ideas that contribute to growth and success – supply and demand, customer service, research and development. In the church there are basic doctrines that are at the heart of what it means to be a Christian – creation ex nihilo, salvation by grace through faith – but especially the doctrine that there is one God who exists in three ...

Word of the Week: Goodbyes Goodbyes are always hard, right? Recently, Grace elder Chris Kidd, who was on sabbatical this year, came to check in with his fellow elders. He told us that during this season of his sabbatical and Cara’s recent time coming off of GCC staff, they had been staying closer to their home (off of Highway 20). They came to realize that the long drive to Grace made life challenging for their young family. Chris and Cara have decided to seek fellowship closer to home where they could remain active and care well for their ...

The Trinity and Prayer

It’s funny to me that we are writing about the Trinity, since I’ve had a number of discussions with Grace people about this concept recently. We are all mystified by the Trinity, which shouldn’t surprise us. We are finite people with a birthday (a beginning), and another day that will be mentioned in our obituary (the end point). How could we begin to fully grasp the God who is infinite and eternal - three persons and one God?  The Bible reveals God as one God not in three parts or three phases, but in three “persons.” We see the different ...

Word of the week: Moving day(s). There are a lot of moving days happening soon at Grace. Assistant Pastor Tag Tuck moves 100% into the Pantops Church plant on June 1. We will see him around some this summer as he has two preaching chances at GCC, but he won’t be function in his adult ministry role any longer. On September 1, he will transfer completely over to being an employee of the Presbytery of the Blue Ridge. Great adventures ahead for sure! He will be assessing the progress of things along the way, but perhaps the first worship ...

The Trinity and Salvation

Jesus loves you. If we boiled the gospel down to three words, how many of us would choose these three? The gospel is the message of Christ’s love for us. But if we only focus on Christ’s love for us, we can end up with a lopsided view of God. Does the Father love us too? What about the Holy Spirit? The result is that sometimes we think Jesus is the one who loves us and thankfully he’s persuasive enough to convince the other two persons to come along. This couldn’t be farther from the truth and it’s why the Trinity is so important! The ...

Word of the Week: Prayer Hey Church, We are having our day of prayer for our church and members from 6:00 PM Friday, May 12 to 6:00 PM Saturday, May 13. Two corporate times for prayer are offered at the church building at 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Saturday. There are still plenty of times for prayer available. If you forgot to grab a prayer card, let us know what time you would like to pray and we will send you some prayer requests for that 15-minute time block. Can’t wait to see how the Lord hears our prayers and answers powerfully from ...

What is the Trinity?

The word “Trinity” is found nowhere in the Bible. Does that make it useless? Does that make it an optional doctrine? There are many people who say they don’t believe in God these days. A very good follow up question would be to ask, “Which god is it that you don’t believe in?” At that point they might say, a god who sits in the sky aloof from my problems while still expecting me to do good, a god who doesn’t understand me because he’s an ego maniac always concerned with his own glory, a god who hates all the people I love, etc., etc....

Word of the week: Opportunity Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity (Colossians 4:4-5, NIV) I was reminded recently to make the most of every opportunity. I was having a conversation with a guy I just know by name through a recreational activity we both enjoy. We hit it off pretty well but neither of us really knows the other. Several times as we were hanging out, he talked about recently having to put his dog to sleep. After we were done ...
