Margins

March 31, 2017
Leslie Velasquez
Margins. Do you remember doing a writing assignment and, in order to meet the requirements, you increased the margins a little? Or maybe you had so much to say that you narrowed them down to fit everything you wanted to say. Margins are defined as providing an edge or a border or they can be the amount from which something is won or falls short. Have you ever thought about margins in life?  My life is just plain busy right now. It seems like at every turn and every moment of my day there is something pressing. Even as I sit and write this ...

Word of the Week: Contrast Charles Dicken’s starts his classic novel A Tale of Two Cities with the contrasting thoughts: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” He was going a different direction in his thoughts, but I find life at Grace right now to be a time of great contrasts. It truly is the best of times:  We are helping to plant a new church with Tag Tuck, we have a young assistant pastor with some great gifts taking Tag’s place as he plants, and this weekend we meet the leading candidate for the youth director ...

Prayer, Missions and Ireland

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31-32 This might be my favorite passage about prayer. It doesn’t tell us how to pray. It doesn’t tell us when to pray. It doesn’t even tell us what to pray for! But still it’s my favorite. It’s my favorite because it tells us the most important thing we need to know about prayer – Jesus is a praying Savior. Against all the ...

Word of the Week:  Faithfulness One of our values as a church is faithfulness. We value and honor commitment to the long haul with one another and our church. We want to model and encourage that. To me that is rooted in the faithfulness of God. When life gets stormy I personally begin to run to God’s faithfulness. I look for scriptures that preach and teach the faithfulness of God. I think about them, ponder them, and ask God to calm my heart with their life and truth. God is faithful and long suffering. That’s a great reason to seek to ...

Malawi Trip

Imagine being invited to present to the key leaders in your area of greatest experience. You will speak to them about topics you think about every day. This is your life’s work, and you’ve learned many lessons the hard way. You often wish you could help younger leaders avoid your mistakes. Now, at last, you have the opportunity to pass on some of the lessons you’ve learned. Now, imagine those leaders are doing the same things you are doing, but with much less training and many fewer resources. They come hungry to learn and eager to take ...

Word of the Week: Nursery The word of the week is nursery. As happens from time to time, we need to recruit additional workers for a ministry at Grace. This one does not require a Bible degree. A big heart and a big smile are essential. We need people to serve the Lord by serving the babies and toddlers of our church. We want their early experiences of church to be joyous ones. Some of our key workers are taking a break right now for good reasons.  The rest of the team is working about once every four weeks. If we can add 8 more ...

Grace Church Missions

March 07, 2017

Part of our commitment to be a church that doesn’t exist for ourselves is a commitment to missions. So, over the next few weeks, we’d like to elaborate on some of the missions we have planned this year. One of the ways we live out our church value “We don’t exist for ourselves” is through our church’s involvement in world missions. Some of you may not be as familiar with the term “world missions.” World missions refers to cross cultural communication of the gospel of Jesus Christ which we do in another country. I’m getting that specific ...

Word of the Week: Tom Sunday's big news was that Tom Breeden will, God willing, be the new Assistant Pastor of Grace Community Church starting June 1. As Tag transitions out of Grace to plant a church on Pantops, Tom will be coming to pick up the slack on adult ministry - primarily small groups and Adult Foundations. He will also preach and do pastoral care as all pastors at Grace have done through the years. He will be helping us reach the goals we have for the next few years I’m personally excited about this. Tom has been our intern ...

The God Who Sings

March 03, 2017
Tom Breeden
What’s a celebration without music? Imagine a birthday party where nobody sang. Or envision a bride walking down the aisle to complete silence. Picture Christmas without carols. It all feels off, doesn’t it? Celebrations require music! We sing when we have something to sing about – something worth celebrating. Did you know we aren’t the only ones to sing when we celebrate? In Zephaniah 3:17, God sings too. The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by ...

Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Community This winter we have planned a number of men’s events that have no direct spiritual emphasis. Some of our women’s events have been similar- so it’s fair to ask “why do this?” Why have events that don’t involve some study of God’s word and prayer? We forget about the power of another means God uses called fellowship, or community. One thing God uses in our lives is one another. So, when we are together doing something fun, our relationships develop and deepen, and a ground work is laid for further work. Some number ...
