Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Life We talked about it Sunday - I am the resurrection and the life.  Jesus promised us life right now.  He is the bread of life.  He is the light of life.  He promised a source of life in our hearts.  Break away each day for a few minutes to trust and believe these promises.  There is something for us to enjoy and receive.  Don’t let the good steal the great. Once again a big thanks to my coworkers.  I could mention several, but I will point out one.  Barbara Eppard was here early on Sunday and stayed late to help our ...

I didn’t want to be a Christian. I was raised in a household with your typical American morality. Character, not faith, is what mattered. Good people do good things. By the time I was in high school, if there was a God (and I was not convinced there was), he had no real bearing on my life. I knew what I wanted out of life and I intended to get it. I could do it on my own. I do not remember much from my eleventh grade Chemistry class, but it was an important class for me nonetheless. It mattered because it was my lab partner who first ...

Word of the week: Invitation Invitation is a great word, isn’t it?  In the best case, you get invited to something special and wonderful - a wedding you are looking forward to witnessing, or a birthday party for a special friend.  Don’t forget there are people considering where to go to church this Easter.  They don’t have a church they attend, but are feeling a vague interest in going somewhere. Why not take a few risks to invite some people to Grace this Sunday?  Remember we have the 8:30 and 10:45 times starting this week.  In between ...

Have you ever seen a 3-D movie and worn the 3-D glasses? It’s quite an experience; the glasses distort your perspective. This distortion helps with watching a movie specifically designed for it, but even so, things appear very strange and often with a fuzz or glow; it can be extremely disorienting. My recent experience with the Lord has been similar.  While I’ve been following Jesus for a long time, I recently realized how much my expectations mask what I thought God’s expectations were for me. I’m trying in a new way to get reoriented in ...

The word of the week is volunteer.  It assumes something, doesn’t it?  If you volunteer for something, you aren’t being compelled to do the thing.  You can simply not sign up.  You can un-volunteer.  You can keep your head down and hope they look elsewhere. This past Sunday we honored our volunteers.  We have a volunteer ARMY!  It was amazing, overwhelming, and encouraging.  Thank you so much for volunteering.  So many people are active in serving Christ by serving His church. As I sat down, my wife reminded me of some volunteers we ...

Soon, you will get to hear some of my story in a “Stories of Jesus” video during our worship service.  I have so many stories of Jesus it is hard to know where to begin.  Here is a small one. Recently an old friend of mine died.  Her name was Katie Jones, and she was the Youth Director at my church and my coworker at the church camp at which I spent four summers.  Obviously Christian camping was important in those early years.  Katie was one reason I spent four summers at camp, instead of a few weeks. I stared working at summer camps at ...

Word of the Week: Worship Worship is the word of the week, and worship is WORK!  I had the privilege of leading the musical portion of our worship this past Sunday.  It was a great joy, and it was a ton of work.  In addition to the Thursday night practice (a little more than an hour), we had a Sunday morning run through as well.  Then of course, we played during the service itself.  I found myself wanting to practice several times that week to get ready, and I don’t think I’m the only musician at GCC who does that. So thank you to Karen ...

Wouldn’t it be cool if someone made a movie trailer for your life?  I wonder what material would be included in it.  I think many of us would hope all our picture-perfect, proudest moments would make the cut.  But when I think about what makes for a great movie or story, it’s actually not those moments themselves.  It’s the adversity and struggle that precede them that really seal the deal for me.  They make a plot worth telling and sharing. When I take an honest look back on my experiences so far, yes, I have seen Jesus at work in the good ...

Word of the week: Three What if our real “mission field” could be reduced to three?  That’s three friends, neighbors, or relatives for whom we pray to receive Christ or be renewed in their faith if they’ve walked away. I’m friends with these three, and my friendship doesn’t depend on them joining the “Jesus team”.  But in my secret prayer life, I’m praying for a breakthrough.  I’m listening intently in serious conversations to understand their belief system.  And very gently, when it seems wise, I talk about Christ and what He means in my ...
