Word of the Week

February 24, 2016
Don Ward
Word of the week: HELP! Help is a word that means the same thing most of the time, but the level of your voice varies the meaning.  HELP in all caps is the same as screaming for help!  Sunday we had the first of two identical meetings about our new service starting around Easter time.  We will have 10 weeks of services at 8:30 and 10:45, with Foundations at 9:40.  Help is the word of your week because GCC needs help!  For our new 8:30 AM communion service to work well, we need some volunteers for this 10 week time frame.  You can stop right ...

Jobs for Life

If you or your spouse were fired tomorrow from their job, what would you do? What are the next five action items that would go on your to-do list? If you were fired on Tuesday and I told you that on Wednesday you could come to my office for a job interview there’s probably a good chance you already know what you should wear, how you should stand, and the best way to present yourself to make a good impression. You probably have a printer, paper, or access to both in order to create multiple copies of a résumé. There’s probably even one ...

A New Worship Service for Grace Community Church, Part 2

February 18, 2016
Jimmy Wood
[Don Ward]: Elder Jimmy Wood writes for us this week.  He has led the development of the session’s vision for the method and content of our new service.  I am personally excited for this vision and looking forward to it. A few months ago I read an article that resonated with me about what a worship service intending to reach the up and coming generation might look like.  The author concluded that in the search for meaning millennials are starting to realize that “new” and “trendy” doesn’t guarantee happiness and satisfaction.  Studies are ...

Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Astonished Astonished is a fun word to say.  According to the dictionary, it means "to fill with sudden and overpowering surprise or wonder; amaze."  I’m thinking back on this week’s “story of Jesus” from Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus and the Big Storm.  The disciples were truly astonished at Jesus’ control of the elements.  The four fisherman who followed Jesus knew the dangers the sea presented.  They knew they were in deep trouble in the storm.  But when Jesus stilled the storm, they were fearful at the presence of One like ...

A New Worship Service for Grace Community Church, Part 1

February 11, 2016

As first announced this past Sunday, the elders have approved a second worship service for the 10 weeks from Easter through Memorial Day weekend.  For Easter, we will have two identical services.  Beginning April 3, the early service will be one hour long. Each time it will close with the serving of the Lord’s Supper. The final alignment of times is still under consideration, but to give you an idea, the communion service will begin somewhere in the 8 o’clock hour and last one hour.  There will be a break and then Foundations will last 45 ...

Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Mad “I’m mad about Jesus.”  This past Sunday I spoke about the man who had been a Hindu priest who came to faith in Jesus who exclaimed, “I’m mad about Jesus!”  Isn’t that a funny way to put it?  Without context it could mean different things.  I have met some angry Christians who were incensed about so many things.  They were mad about other Christians’ bad theology.  They were angry that our ideas are losing in the public square.  They were mad, and it seemed to have something to do with Jesus.  The main thing I noticed ...

Seeing Our Neighbor

February 04, 2016
Tom Breeden
“And who is my neighbor?” That was the response when Jesus told his questioner that the whole law was summed up in the command to love the Lord our God and to love our neighbor. We know who the Lord is, but who is our neighbor? As he often does in the Gospels, Jesus answered this question with a parable. In Luke 10:29-37, Jesus answers with the famous Parable of the Good Samaritan. This is a striking story because in it, Jesus tears down so many of his culture’s preconceived notions. Neighbors aren’t defined by proximity. They aren’t ...

“Audrey” is the word of the week.  That’s because musical artist Audrey Assad is coming to Grace Community Church on March 20th. She will lead worship along with our musicians at our 10:30am service, and she will have a concert with us that night at 7:00pm. She is a terrific vocalist and creative songwriter, and had the Christian Album of the year in 2010 on Amazon and Christian Breakthrough album of the year on iTunes.  She has toured with musicians like Chris Tomlin, Tenth Avenue North, Matt Maher, and Jars of Clay. Someone asked me a ...
