Idols of the Heart: Security

February 26, 2015
Stacey Powdrell
When I hear the word “security” my 29-year-old mind still pictures the Peanuts character Linus and the dirty raggedy blanket he always dragged around with him.  A GCC high school student said security makes her think of a safe place.  She feels most secure when she is giving and receiving a hug. I imagine the majority of GCC adults think of a different set of words, like financial security and job security. Not quite as warm and delightful as blankets and hugs, right? I’d be lying if I said I never struggle with the heart idol of security.  ...

Word of the Week: Snow Day - uh oh! We had a church snow day.  I don’t like them, and the decision to do so is always hard.  Here is one big thing we missed- encouraging you to sign up for our upcoming sexual sanity seminar: Finding Sexual Sanity in a Sex-Crazed Culture. How do we deal with the real issues presented to us in our sex-crazed culture?  How do we make it and survive - even thrive in this world?  The seminar is for teens and older; you can bring a whole family for $30. We have a lot more info coming your way in the weeks ahead, ...

Word of the Week:  Joy We had ten new family members stand up at GCC on Sunday.  It brings me joy.  Their names are Bob and Betty Arms, Claire Flores, Brian and Hyunju McDonald, John and Sonia Montgomery, Florence Pinkston, and Bruce and Karel Seger.  Each of them had a story to tell us - the story of God’s grace in their lives.  For some it was a story that began in childhood when their parents spoke of Jesus before they were able to respond.  For others their belief in Christ started in adulthood with no religious upbringing.  Two of them ...

Idols of the Heart: Significance

February 19, 2015

This week our blog starts a new series where different staff members discuss an issue of heart idolatry.  I don’t think they picked me on purpose to talk about the idol of significance (Don, we are giving you one for which we all know you struggle), but I’m familiar with this issue because there are times my heart worships significance - I can be a glory hound, wanting honor to come my way that belongs to God alone. Before I go too far, I don’t want to assume that the phrase “idols of the heart” is familiar to everyone.  Elise Fitzpatrick’s ...

Word of the Week: Gallery Grace Community Church has an art gallery.  It’s in our hallway.  It features artwork from a number of Grace members.  Sometimes I walk down the hall in such a hurry I miss the gallery.  Other moments I stop and notice.  Let me encourage you to stop and notice!  There are some great stories along the wall.  Your friends and mine have some real skills.  If you browse through the gallery this week, you will be amazed at the talent of some of the children and youth of our church.  People can surprise you sometimes ...

Where Paul's Been and Where He's Taking Us

Do you ever wonder how preaching is supposed to work? Preaching affects us over time. Week after week, sermon after sermon, God shapes us through His Word preached. Almost imperceptibly the themes, ideas, and applications that come from the Bible are meant to soak into our bones. That’s the easiest way for me to explain it, because that’s how I’ve come to understand how preaching has shaped me over the course of my life thus far. There are lots of singularly great sermons we can read in books or listen to online, but to really get the most ...

Word of the Week: Creativity We witnessed a resurrection this past Sunday.  It wasn’t of a dead person, but of an old hymn.  The hymn is called “It is Finished” and at Tag’s request Karen began to look into using it.  Jimmy Wood ended up writing a new tune for this old hymn, and I know that Karen Sawyer helped him put the finishing touches on it Thursday night.  It was well-written and arranged.  The chorus was very singable and I found myself joining in. The words are a great summary of the message of Galatians. Here they are again: ...

Sabbatical: What is it?

February 02, 2015
Don Ward
This past Sunday Jimmy Wood made an announcement about my upcoming sabbatical.  Just to be clear, it doesn’t actually start until April 20th.  With two weeks of vacation added in the mix, this means I will return to GCC on August 3rd.  Practically this means I won’t be available for any normal pastoral concerns during this period.  Those concerns will shift to our assistant pastor Tag Tuck and the elders. Someone asked if I could play golf.  My calendar is available for golf outings on weekends.  My game is unimproved, though.  I take a ...
