Faith and Obedience

October 24, 2017

Few things are worse in the morning than orange juice and toothpaste. Do you know what I’m talking about? I’ve learned the hard way that if I drink orange juice with breakfast, I’d better wash it down with some water or wait a while before I brush my teeth. Otherwise, I’m in for a rough start to the day. Orange juice and toothpaste just do not – under any circumstances – go together. Many of us approach faith and obedience like orange juice and toothpaste. They do not go together under any circumstances. In no way should they mix. We are ...

Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Time I don’t know about you, but I like to keep a tight schedule. My calendar is typically up to date. I don’t like to arrive anywhere late, instead usually showing up at least ten minutes early. I have a very strict sense of time…and it can be jarring when things don’t match up with it. This week we have a team of nine people serving in Japan. One of the wonders of modern technology is they can send us frequent updates about where they are and what they’re doing. But sometimes it’s a bit jarring to read those updates, ...

Faith and Repentance

October 18, 2017
Sean Smith
Faith and repentance are intermingled at the core. Have you ever wondered if it’s either faith or repentance? We are called to have faith and to repent. It is actually not possible to have faith in Jesus without repentance and the Bible makes that clear in Mark 1:15 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” We can’t separate our faith from the repenting of our sins. In our repentance we are saying that we can’t fix ourselves no matter how hard we try and we put our faith in Jesus who can ...

Word of the week: Wonder I wonder what’s going on? Why has so and so left the church? Why did we change ___ in the worship service? When did we decide to do a church plant? Is that you? Do you have questions that bug you but you haven’t asked? If you are a member here, you should know you always have the right to ask questions. If you want to talk to a pastor about a question, we invite you to do so. If you want to talk to one of the elders, we can help you get in touch with them. Our staff members’ contact information is always on the ...

Faith and Belief

I remember the first time I took my friend rock climbing with me. He was climbing up the side of this cliff and got about half way up before he reached the tricky spot. He had ascended to a nice solid ledge, but he couldn’t stay there. If he wanted to make it to the top, he would have to lean his weight off the ledge and reach blindly around the jagged corner that was sticking out of the cliff. On the far side of that edge was a nice big hold for him to grab with his hand. He wouldn’t be able to see it; he would just have to reach out and ...

Word of the Week: Joy-zaustion Ok, there is no word called joy-zaustion. But there should be! It’s when you feel great joy and exhaustion at the same time. We had a busy week this past week, culminating with our “One Life”/20th anniversary Sunday. I felt great joy in seeing the committed core of Grace, along with many guests that we all brought. Three people came to the early service “uninvited”- they were just visiting and looking for a new church. A friend of mine who I invited at the last minute came to the 8:30 service, and a number of ...

Twenty Years

October 04, 2017

This Sunday, October 8th is the 20th anniversary of Grace Community Church, and as you know, we are inviting friends and hoping to include them in our time together. I want to take this chance to reflect on these twenty years. Twenty years ago, I still had hair, I hadn’t reached forty, and had two children at home. When we moved to Charlottesville in the fall of 1997 Emily was just moving from elementary to sixth grade, and Anna was starting second grade. In May of that year a momentous day occurred. We were living in Dayton and I was ...

Word of the Week: Thankful Most of you know I’m leading the 9-person team to Japan later this month. The team has worked hard in many ways but our funding was coming in slowly.... until this weekend. When the sun rose on Friday morning September 29th, we had still bout $8,000 to raise. After the silent auction and the response to some previous efforts, we now have under $2,000 to raise. There has been some amazing generosity to these efforts. Praise the Lord for your kindness and generosity to the work of Christ! Don
