Word of the Week

Word of the week: Life

Two issues that surround the dignity of human life came together this week.  Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is a time to remember that we are made in the image of God, and our worth and value is determined by that.  Dr. King obviously is a giant figure in modern American history who reminded us of that reality, and peacefully struggled to see that skin color didn’t dictate the rights citizens have in our country.

A second issue marks this week - the loss of the rights of unborn humans in 1973.  In January of 1973, a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court has resulted in a tsunami of death for unborn children in America.  One sad consequence of this is that the plentiful supply of babies available for adoption eventually dried up, making adoption a very expensive proposition most suitable for the very rich. The environment, which allowed Charlie and Phyliss Scharp to adopt three wonderful kids on a middle-class salary, no longer exists today.  One of those three precious children became my wife Caron!

We touched on both issues this past Sunday.  Sunday morning, we showed the Pregnancy Center of Central Virginia’s video, which demonstrated their grace-centered approach to the abortion issue.  Young women testified to the loving care of the Center from the first meeting on beyond the birth of their child.  Sunday night we gathered with other churches to worship God and remember Dr. King.  It was perhaps the greatest service of its kind in the Greene County Ministerial Association history.  It was one of our larger crowds, with more participation from our own church than in past years, and we saw the largest offering in the association’s history: over $2,000.  This money will go toward scholarships for William Monroe High School students who share a vision for community service with Dr. King.

No matter who we see this week…or what they do…they bear the image of God in themselves.  There is a worth and value which even our sin and brokenness can’t remove.  This is a week to remember that.

In Him,

Don
