Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Romans

Tom Breeden and I are giving you “samples” of Paul’s letter to the Romans in the Sunday morning preaching. This past Sunday gave you one of the more challenging passages in that very respectable Bible interpreters come out with a range of interpretations. This coming Sunday, we hit Romans 8 and get into some pretty joyous material.

I encourage you to read Romans a time or two in the coming weeks. It is enormously important in the history of the Christian faith, even though at times it is confounding to understand Paul’s indictment of the human race in Romans 1:18-3:19 is breathtaking and shatters any idea that humans can earn God’s favor by their deeds. “There is no one righteous, no not one.”  But then 3:20 through 11:36 is all about the gospel of Jesus Christ and how it saves us, changes us, lifts us, assures us. The mystery of God’s sovereignty is unfolded in chapters 9-11 of that section, with another conclusion that leaves the reader catching his or her breath.  For you practical people (what do you want me to do?), Romans 12-16 has a lot of practical application of living out your gracious beliefs.

Pastors in past ages would take many years going through Romans. Modern churchgoers dislike the five-year sermon series!  Just know we have given you a snapshot of this marvelous part of God’s Word.

I’m excited to be preaching from Romans 8 this week!

In Him,

Don
