Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Potentate

When was the last time you used that in a sentence? Well, if you were in worship with us on Sunday, you used it at least once. In “Crown Him with Many Crowns,” we worshipped Jesus as the “Potentate of time.”

Crown him the Lord of years,

The Potentate of time,

Creator of the rolling spheres,

Ineffably sublime.

So, what’s a potentate? It’s a ruler or someone in power (think “potent”). Jesus is a ruler, but not like any other. He’s the Ruler of time itself! He’s the Creator of the planets and stars in space! He’s the Ruler far above and beyond any other ruler. But our stanza doesn’t stop there.

All hail, Redeemer, hail!

For thou hast died for me;

Thy praise shall never, never fail

Throughout eternity.

Jesus is the King who knows me. In fact, he died for me. The Lord of Years died so I could have eternal life in him. This is the wonderful tension of our Jesus. He’s more highly exalted than we can even comprehend, yet he stoops down low enough to reach even me. If I walked up on Capitol Hill, no one would know my name. But when I show up in the courts of heaven, the Potentate there most certainly will. Our Potentate uses his power to rescue sinners and that’s why his praise will never, never fail throughout eternity.
