Word of the Week: Vote

Our local, state and national election day is November 8th.  If you live anywhere near Grace, there are ballot issues at several levels. The presidential national election has been the most contentious and unusual contest in my lifetime. I’ve read arguments from a Christian viewpoint for and against the two major candidates, and for and against at least two of the 3rd party and independent candidates. This might lead someone to throw their hands up in despair, and stay home that day. Let me mention several reasons I believe we should vote.

First, it is an immense privilege. There is not a “thou shall always vote” verse that makes voting a righteous act and not voting a terrible sin. No one in bible times envisioned a government where ordinary people had significant influence. I think the “love your neighbor” command might well be applied. Get educated and vote wisely to help make our society as just and righteous as possible this side of heaven. If you have skills that could help, get involved in local government and provide some leadership. We sometimes talk about voting as a Christian duty. That’s like describing a beach vacation as a duty. That’s a delight and privilege. Voting is a privilege, and even in today’s world, it is not a given.

Second, there are a number of important races to decide. Even if you decide not to vote for President, or to write in your favorite Marvel Comic character, there are other important races. Every US House seat is up for vote, as well as other offices. There are two Virginia ballot initiatives. It is now too late to register to vote in Virginia, but November 1 is the deadline for an absentee ballot in case you need one.

Based on my conversations with you, most of you are well informed about this year’s election. I hesitate to recommend any one source of information, as many are partisan, slanted and incomplete. Do your homework, say your prayers, vote your conscience, and keep praying for leaders and those in authority. That last part I know to be good, beautiful, and right.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. (1 Tim. 2:1-2 ESV)
