Word of the Week

Focus: A powerful word. When you are trying to read something and it is out of focus, it is frustrating.  If road signs are hard to read, you can easily get lost. Organizations can lose focus. You can get so busy with organizational life that you lose focus. You forget why you are there. The main things become the minor things, and the minor things become everything. You get so deep in the weeds you wonder why you are a part of that.

In spite of all the excellent focus texts in the bible, churches can lose focus in many ways. Last year some leaders suggested GCC could use some focus. People asked for our dreams for the future.  If we had focus, they couldn’t see it. If we had lost it, they wanted us to regain it.

The elders have been spending countless hours mulling over this very issue. They have poured over member surveys and they have weighed in themselves. They spent six hours one Saturday hashing over the information and seeking to answer six focus questions. Summer came and some momentum was lost. They got back after it and put some ideas on paper. They sought feedback from staff and deacons. They spent several more meetings discussing and refining and rehashing. In the process, some things came into focus. We remembered the main things. We sensed the Holy Spirit relighting our fires. We saw the forest as well as the trees. Things are clearer now. We know who we are, ever more clearly. We are focused. We will be talking about it soon. Get ready. Buckle your seatbelt.

In Him,

Don
