Word of the Week: Pot

It is known by many other names, but like most of you I’ve heard about pot (marijuana/weed/wacky weed, etc.) for many years. Except for some second hand smoke at a Doobie Brothers concert, it hasn’t been something I’ve experienced or found a temptation.  I know that is not the case with many of you, and some of you reading this might be secret users of pot.

Views about pot are changing in the culture, even as medical science finds more and more evidence of its long term harm to users. Let that sink in: even as research shows the harmful effects more clearly, more and more people are using pot legally in America.

Marijuana also affects brain development. When marijuana users begin using as teenagers, the drug may reduce thinking, memory, and learning functions and affect how the brain builds connections between the areas necessary for these functions. Marijuana’s effects on these abilities may last a long time or even be permanent.

I don’t need any more brain issues!  “Reducing thinking memory and learning functions” are not my idea of fun. But, that doesn’t make it immoral, does it?

What is the church’s response? Honestly, I’ve never preached a sermon that addressed marijuana use. I’ve touched on addiction of various kinds, but haven’t addressed this substance. I’m guessing some folks think it is relatively innocent fun, if illegal. It might be considered about the same as a few drinks. The PCA denomination is known for her freedom of conscience regarding alcohol use (but not abuse).  What’s wrong with it?

A bold new book answers many of the questions we all have about this naturally occurring substance: Can I Smoke Pot? is coming out in print and ebook editions in early October.  The authors are Tom Breeden and Mark Ward, Jr.

Yes, that’s correct, our own friend and trusty intern Tom Breeden has written a book on pot.  While it’s meant we’ve had a lot of fun at his expense, the truth is that Tom and Mark have done a great service by addressing a sensitive topic directly.  It has been a singular joy to get to know Tom over the last year or so, and I can’t wait to sit down and read this book soon.  Why not pick up a copy?

In Him,

Don
