Word of the Week

Word of the week: Opportunity

Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity (Colossians 4:4-5, NIV)

I was reminded recently to make the most of every opportunity. I was having a conversation with a guy I just know by name through a recreational activity we both enjoy. We hit it off pretty well but neither of us really knows the other. Several times as we were hanging out, he talked about recently having to put his dog to sleep. After we were done and were packing up to leave, he really started talking about this moment. It hit me - this is an opportunity to show some friendship and concern. This dog represented more than just the usual trauma of losing a family pet. His grief was also wrapped up in a divorce he went through that was fairly fresh. He was weeping pretty openly about this, which reflected more trust than normal. I wasn’t sure whether to offer to pray right then or what. I chose another route but felt like the Lord was impressing upon me to really listen to his pain and engage with him. I was thankful to have been there at that time.

Friends, let’s make the most of every opportunity - not to manipulate or cajole people into something, but to show the love and compassion we’ve received. The kindness and friendship may give us a chance to explain the comfort and care we experience from Christ in all the sorrows of life. I say this because I was in a rush that day, and needed to leave. I almost missed a golden moment. Let’s not miss them. Let’s make the most of them.

In Him,

Don
