The word of the week is volunteer. It assumes something, doesn’t it? If you volunteer for something, you aren’t being compelled to do the thing. You can simply not sign up. You can un-volunteer. You can keep your head down and hope they look elsewhere.
This past Sunday we honored our volunteers. We have a volunteer ARMY! It was amazing, overwhelming, and encouraging. Thank you so much for volunteering. So many people are active in serving Christ by serving His church.
As I sat down, my wife reminded me of some volunteers we missed (how can that be?), and asked me, “What about the staff?” Technically, they aren’t volunteers because they work here. Or, are they? Did you notice who was handing out the cupcakes? (Cupcakes aren’t on any job description.) Did you see who was at the visitor lunch helping? Among some others were some of our staff members.
As I look at our staff, I see people who are also volunteers. None of them does the minimum job requirements and calls it a day. None of them ever says, “I can’t stay for that because that’s not in my job description.” In other words, they too are volunteers. They do more than is asked of them because they want this church to fulfill her mission and high calling.
So thanks to another group of “volunteers”: Tag, Stacey, Candy, Karen, Cara, Barbara, and Tom (our upaid intern). Thanks for doing things you don’t have to do. Thanks for doing much more than the minimum. Thanks for the love and sacrifice. Thanks for volunteering!
That’s it from my desk,
Don
