Word of the Week

Word of the week: Extraordinary

Extraordinary is a great word. I love how it sounds when you say it. Many seasons of church life together are ordinary. That is good. Some of the things that are extraordinary are not good. Sometimes a regular week of church life is a good thing - no tragedies, normal life, things carry on as usual. Once in a while something happens that is extraordinarily good.

Sunday, we prayed for Joseph Varaksa as he will soon assume the role of chaplain for the Good News Jail Ministry at the Albemarle County Regional Jail. It was an extraordinary moment for Joseph as he was the first Youth Director at Grace, and now returns to a full-time ministry position after a long interval. God has given him a great passion and calling for this. It was an extraordinary moment for a church that has as one of her values:

We don’t exist for ourselves

As those so extravagantly loved, we exist for our neighbors and for the world. We are the light of the world. We make room for guests. We care for others while expecting nothing in return.

Jail ministry is best when we expect nothing in return and are there in Jesus’ name and for his sake. Yesterday was an extraordinary moment. Thinking about that moment yesterday in the 10:45 service gives me great joy! Thank you, Father, for that moment!

In Him,

Don
