Word of the Week: Confess

Confess is an interesting word. Law enforcement wants to get a suspect to confess what they did. We encourage believers in Jesus to confess their sins to one another. The biblical work in the Greek which is translated “confess” means to “say the same things”, or to acknowledge or accept something (I left some nerdy stuff at the bottom for some of you.).

I’m thinking about confess today because Sunday our newest member met with the elders to confess Christ. He announced and declared that he believes Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again from the dead. He gave the “good confession.” It was just a meeting with a few elders and two pastors, but praise bands were playing in my head, and my heart was singing. He started with us some time ago but had been wrestling with issues of one kind or another. It all came together and he was ready to say it out loud: Jesus is Lord! If you come Sunday morning at 10:45 you will find out who made the good confession (assuming it doesn’t snow like crazy)!

It may seem sometimes like the whole world is rejecting true Christianity. In fact, they often don’t have enough information. They see the bad press some Christians generate (some deserved, some undeserved), and they stop there. But we are all were born with an aching longing for meaning which is only truly satisfied when we believe in Christ and make the good confession.

Do you have a friend who is open to some kind of discussion about the faith? You can start it perhaps. There are ways our staff here can help you, including the occasional Christianity Explored offering where skeptics are welcome. Imagine the day when your friend makes the good confession! Keep praying! No one ever knows what God can do!

Here is some Greek dictionary stuff for you nerdy types.

ἐξομολογέω [ἐξ, ὁμολογέω] – 1. ‘make a public statement or response indicating agreement/acknowledgment’, mid. – a.admit, confess wrongdoing/sin (in awareness that wrongdoing is not unnoticed) Mt 3:6; Mk 1:5; Ac 19:18; Js 5:16. – b. acknowledge, admit in awareness of an entity’s right to recognition Mt 11:25; Ro 14:11; 15:9; Phil 2:11. – 2. the act. ἐξομολογέω is a development of the standard mid. and derives naturally from the general idea of acknowledgment: ‘accept an offer’, agree, accept/close a deal, act. abs. Lk 22:6.
