Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Snow

Well, by now, everybody is talking about it. By tomorrow, we are supposed to be enjoying it.  I’ve lived through plenty of Central VA snowstorms that never panned out.  I’ve also been through storms that shut things down for days. This is predicted to shut things down for days - or, maybe only a day or two if it doesn’t pan out.

Many things were planned for this weekend. If the storm pans out, they will all be cancelled. If it doesn’t, perhaps we will clear things enough to at least have a worship service on Sunday. If we don’t, I hope you will worship at your house - read the bible, pray, sing a song, and enjoy one another.

What goes into to cancelling church events? Truth is, we love having church and having you here together. I’d love to never cancel. However, I don’t think that is wise, nor do our elders and deacons. Some of the key factors: 1) Can you make to us safely?  Can you make it home safely? If government officials are asking us to stay off of the roads, it’s an easy decision. If a blinding snowstorm is happening during the church service, we will all be concerned for your safety. 2) Is the GCC facility safe for you to use?  Can we adequately clear the lot and the walks and minimize risks to you getting in and out?

If we have the larger snowfall amounts than are predicted, it will be an easy decision. If the storm moves another direction, we will do everything we can to have church with whoever feels safe to make it out.

How will you know?  Check GCC’s Facebook, or the local TV stations and their websites.  We put cancellation notices into NBC 29 and the Newsplex. They show up on the crawlers at the screen bottom, and on their websites under closings.

See you soon, or sometime! Safe sledding to all!
