Stories of Jesus - Don

Soon, you will get to hear some of my story in a “Stories of Jesus” video during our worship service.  I have so many stories of Jesus it is hard to know where to begin.  Here is a small one.

Recently an old friend of mine died.  Her name was Katie Jones, and she was the Youth Director at my church and my coworker at the church camp at which I spent four summers.  Obviously Christian camping was important in those early years.  Katie was one reason I spent four summers at camp, instead of a few weeks.

I stared working at summer camps at 15 years old.  That’s pretty young to spend nearly the whole summer away from home.  I remember early in one of those first weeks, I was feeling pretty lonely, homesick, and overwhelmed.  Later one evening Katie and another staff person were with me in the kitchen, and Katie encouraged me like I’d never been encouraged me before.  She told me that I was an amazing young person, and told me how much she loved me.  That started something, making that camp a place where I was known by other people and still loved.  Her passing brought that memory back to my mind.  I look forward to our coming reunion with all the saints of God.

You and I never know when Jesus might weave us into another person’s story.  That kind and gracious word at the right time might have an impact far beyond what we can imagine.  Without the love and encouragement of Katie, at best I might have muddled through a summer, never to return.  Instead, God used her and her words to turn things around for me and influence me for Christ.

Keep your eyes and ears open.  An opportunity may present itself this week to bless someone like Katie blessed me!

In Him,

Don
