Advent - King of Kings

What’s the mark of a true expert?

An expert is the one the professionals themselves go to. The chef of chefs cooks at the restaurant where even other chefs go to eat. The mechanic of mechanics works on cars for even the most avid car people. You know you’ve found someone at the top of their game when other professionals in the field go there.

So what does it mean to say Jesus is the King of Kings? It means he’s at the top of his game. He’s the king that other kings look to. He’s the ruler who governs even other rulers. When Isaiah predicted the birth of Jesus, he was looking forward to a king like this. In Isaiah 9:7, he wrote:

Of the increase of his government and of peace

there will be no end,

on the throne of David and over his kingdom,

to establish it and uphold it

with justice and with righteousness

from this time forth and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Isaiah predicted a king who would rule over the whole earth with justice and righteousness. There would be no corruption or incompetence. Isaiah predicted a leader who would never let us down. That’s the King of Kings.

At some point or another, we’ve all been let down by politicians, parents, bosses – even pastors. But imagine a leader who will never let us down. Imagine a king that surpasses every other king. When we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate that king. In Jesus Christ, the King of Kings was born to us. In Jesus, we have a leader we can count on.

2017 carried all kinds of disappointments. 2018 will bring its share too. Even the best of times carry with them seasons of disappointment. As we close out this year and open a new one, let’s put our trust in this King of Kings. Let’s hope in the king who cannot fail, who will not let us down, from this time forth and forevermore.
