A Word from Our Pastor

Word of the Week: Art!

I missed seeing all my friends from Grace this week.  I was at a wonderful celebration of my sister’s birthday, complete with three amazing grandchildren which my nieces and nephews have given her.  I enjoyed seeing pictures on Facebook of the GCC women’s retreat.  It looked like a lot of fun.

Janice Edwards has helped bring some class to our church building.  She is the one who manages the art gallery in our hallway.  I want you to take an extra few minutes this week to view some of the original art that lines that hallway.  One section especially caught my eye: Chrissy Lavin’s paintings of people from Sierra Leone.  Large numbers of deaths from Ebola don’t get to me as much as those faces.  Here are real people, known by our church members, who live in a place threatened by Ebola.  They live life in extreme poverty, but with great beauty and dignity.  I know all our members who visited there a few years back were deeply impacted by these dear friends.

Take a few minutes with the faces of Ebola, the faces of poverty.  Let your heart be drawn to God in prayer for these precious friends.  As the Spirit leads, touch base with Jimmy and Chrissy Lavin, or with our missions chair Fleming Straughan, and see if there are ways you can help now.

One great Christian organization made the news with their work in Ebola: Samaritan’s Purse.  You can learn more about their efforts here.

See you Sunday, God willing!
